Playlist: The Other Side… Alt Pop Now

Both “alternative” and “pop” are descriptive terms, often only identified by a gut check, and can be applied to practically any genre imaginable. Putting them together, however, is inherently contradictory, but almost inexplicably makes sense. There’s often an unnecessary dichotomy assigned to the concepts of whatever makes something decisively “pop” or conversely “alternative,” but if you consider the fact that sometimes the former fails to find commercial success and sometimes the latter ends up becoming an international smash, all bets are off. For decades, there has consistently been an incredible layer of “alt pop” (a much broader descriptive than “indie pop”) existing underneath the top-40 fodder-du-jour; some of it finds its way through the cracks, some of it never rises above cult status, and some of it easily becomes lost in the sands of time. Here’s a snapshot of today’s alt pop highlights in playlist form.
