In a modern day context, giving alternative rock’s heaviest hitters an electro-funk makeover by the genre’s reigning gods sounds as perfect a pairing as chocolate and peanut butter. Chromeo’s remix of Vampire Weekend’s “The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance” was ahead of its time. The original track, the gorgeous closer lifted off of the group’s self titled debut LP, has all of the spark of a group making serious headways towards critical and commercial domination. Meanwhile, Chromeo had recently unleashed their breakthrough sophomore album and were building a serious name for themselves. The remix is a pretty perfect intersection between the two acts’ contrasting sounds, boosting the track with an anthemic jolt of euphoria that feels just as comfortable in a pop sense as it does on the dance floor, and it still doesn’t betray its coveted role on alternative radio. This is exactly what a remix should be. It’s an exciting face lift that brings an alternate spin on the original without diminishing the track’s integrity. “The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance” is a fantastic song in its own right, but you should definitely give Chromeo’s awesome remix a listen.
