RECORD OF THE YEAR
THE NOMINEES:
“Get Lucky” Daft Punk featuring Pharrell
“Radioactive” Imagine Dragons
“Royals” Lorde
“Locked Out Of Heaven” Bruno Mars
“Blurred Lines” Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell and T.I.
WHO SHOULD WIN:
This award should easily go to “Get Lucky.” The song is a masterclass in production and mixing, not to mention one of the biggest, most lauded hits of the past year. If anyone else walks away with this one, it’d be a total snub. In second place has to be the impeccable “Royals,” a particularly surprise megahit that won people over across almost every format imaginable. In the middle of the pack is definitely “Locked Out Of Heaven,” which is still a great song despite ripping every page right out of The Police’s textbook.
WHO SHOULDN’T WIN:
Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” is a relatively harmless track in a pop context, but it’s hardly Record of the Year worthy. This would be one of those enormous head-scratchers if they walked away with the award. Additionally, “Blurred Lines” is a great track and a defining moment of the past year, but it doesn’t rank higher than some of its competitors.
WHO WILL WIN:
I think “Get Lucky” will actually walk away with the “W” on this one. It would be pretty difficult for them to justify any of the other victors in the category, unless they just decided to give Daft Punk an all-encompasing Album of the Year victory. I think that the runner up is “Locked Out Of Heaven,” followed by “Royals” as the still-deserving dark horse.
