Playlist: A Celebration Of Prince

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate a man named Prince…

There have been countless incredible artists that have graced us with their music over the years, but very few come close to touching the genius that Prince possesses. There have been an excess of moments over the course of his 35 year career where the Purple One has been a polarizing and controversial figure, but his music has always won out (as it should.) Between dawning scandalous outfits to match his scandalous lyrics, dissolving incredible backing band after incredible backing band, changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol, to being one of the first artists to fully embrace the internet, all before completely denouncing it’s many perils, Prince the Artist has always been an enigmatic being that’s kept us on our toes. However, Prince the Musician is undeniably a bonafide genius. Not only is he renowned for being a one-man music machine (writing, recording, producing, and performing EVERYTHING on his records,) but his talents are far above the rest. He can play almost any instrument you can put in his hands, and play it better than almost anyone you know. Realistically, his guitar playing can go head-to-head with the greatest virtuosos of all time. Not to mention, his voice embodies the emotion and passion of Otis Redding, the power of Freddie Mercury, the rawness of Al Green, the charisma of Little Richard, the soul of Sam Cooke, and the control of Aretha Franklin… all with his own very distinct spin. His confusingly large catalog (he’s averaged just about an album or major project a year since 1978,) is brilliantly diverse. If you can think of a genre of music, Prince has already covered it…pop, dance, rock, jazz, soul, hip hop, rockabilly, country, blues, funk, reggae… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. So, with the (relatively) limited selection of Prince material featured on Spotify, I present to you a playlist in Celebration of Prince… one of the most dynamic, well-rounded, and undeniably talented artists in the history of music. It features some of his biggest hits, most famous album cuts and b-sides, noteworthy extended mixes, incredible covers (including the breathtaking “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” performed with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Dhani Harrison at his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony,) and tracks written and/or produced by the Purple One himself performed by other artists. Prepare to go crazy!
