Your Ultimate Party Playlist: 8/13

Now, this playlist in no way advocates intoxication, but in the off chance that you are having a party and were completely lost in the music department, I figured I’d lend a helping hand! Now, usually every party is portioned off into three very distinct sections: The Pregame, The Stride, and The Haze. If you want your party to be successful, you need to cater the music to match the current state of the party! The wrong audio backdrop could completely ruin the outcome of the night. Don’t worry, though, because Hidden Under Headphones is here to help. I have crafted three playlists, one that pairs with each portion of the ultimate party night. It’s not so much about good music as it is about fun music. A party is never the time for being critical; it’s time to indulge your guilty pleasures and reveal to the world that you still know all the words to your favorite 90s songs without any ounce of shame! Clearly, this playlist is very “now,” and will be updated when appropriate. Whether you’re having just a few friends over or a wild house party… here is your ultimate soundtrack. You’re welcome.

THE PREGAME

Much in the same way that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the pregame is most important section of any party. If you’re planning on going out to the club or bar, this is an economically sound preparation, but people tend to forget that even the best house parties require a pregame! Inevitably, there will be a time when only a few people are there, and trust me, they’ll need to be entertained! The soundtrack to the pregame needs to pump everyone up and inspire the group to have fun and let loose. This is no easy feat, so keeping the energy up with fun and familiar tunes is the way to go! This one is paced so that by the end of the playlist, the whole party is prepped and ready to take it to the next level!

THE STRIDE

Now, by this point in the night, everyone is feeling good! Anyone who is far too fashionably late should be walking into, for lack of a better term, a shitshow. Embrace it! This is where your party has hit its stride! The music for this portion is (a bit evilly) designed to play to everyone’s weaknesses. It’s all about the big sing-a-long moments and the opportunity for everyone’s sleaze to make a showing. This is where individuals are going to have their embarrassing “yolo” moment, whether it’s what they’re doing with that guy in the corner or it’s standing on the table leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of “Spice Up Your Life.” This is the real meat of the party, so it should have plenty of memorable moments. As it progresses, more and more “OMG! This song!” moments start to pop up; it’s all about that surprise factor! By the end of it, no one will even know what hit em!

Your Ultimate Party Playlist, Part II: The Stride

THE HAZE

So here we have the part of the night when everything starts to get really hazy. The party has been going on for several hours now (it’s probably early in the morning,) but things are not dead yet! You’ll have a real mix of people at this point. Some won’t be able to stand up, some will be completely passed out in a random place, and some will seemingly just be getting started! At this point, it’s no longer about the sing-a-longs or group dances, it’s about keeping the party’s pulse pumping. The music should be like what you’d hear at a club late at night; the dance music needs to be harder and the hip hop needs to be grittier. Forget about having too many epic pop or rock moments… the music should be pretty mindless, but still recognizable and enjoyable for those hardcore heavyweights who still need some attention. Naturally, if you make it to the bitter end, as much as it makes me vomit at the mere thought, “Don’t Stop Believing” is the cliché way to go.
